The Villa

Seventy-five square metres, and the whole valley

Casa Aura sits on the edge of Megala Chorafia, a hillside village that looks down over Souda Bay on one side and inland towards the White Mountains on the other. The house is new, low and unfussy — smooth sand-coloured plaster, full-height glazing, and courtyard walls built from the same rough limestone the village has always used.

Inside, two bedrooms open onto their own outdoor spaces, and a single bright living room runs from the kitchen to the sliding doors. Outside, a private pool holds the edge of the terrace, warm enough to swim all year and lit from within after dark.

It is a house for slow days: coffee on the terrace, an afternoon in the water, dinner outside while the valley lights come on below.

Location

Megala Chorafia, above Souda Bay

Megala Chorafia is a working village on the ridge above Souda Bay, in the Apokoronas region east of Chania. It is far enough from the coastal resorts to be quiet, and close enough to everything that you never plan a day around the drive.

The ruins of ancient Aptera are a few minutes up the road. Kalyves — sandy beaches, tavernas at the water, a handful of cafés and shops — is a short drive down the hill. Chania Old Town, with its Venetian harbour and the Firkas Fortress, is under twenty minutes away, and the airport is roughly half an hour.

Exceptional

“The perfect Greece summer stay”

The host was very welcoming and easy to communicate with, which made the whole check-in process and our stay completely smooth sailing. The atmosphere in the area was very authentic, and the villa itself had all the amenities you could possibly think of, making it feel like a home away from home throughout our week-long stay. Our expectations were not only met but exceeded. We had a wonderful experience and would definitely recommend this place to others!
